The best truck and caravan GPS apps in Australia (2026)

By the NaviTruck team · Updated 15 October 2026

You know the moment: roadworks, a detour through a town you have never seen, and a rail bridge ahead with a number on it you would rather not test. A car GPS will not help. It has no idea your rig is 4.3 metres tall or that the caravan makes you 14 metres long. A truck and caravan GPS does. Here is how the apps Aussie truckies and caravanners actually use stack up, and why we think NaviTruck is the one to have on the dash.

The short answer

  • Alerts when you are not navigating

    NaviTruck

Warns before low bridges, weight and width limits on any road, with no route set, even with the app closed.

  • Trucks and caravans in one app

    NaviTruck

Profiles for trucks, vans, motorhomes and caravans; switch in one tap.

  • Everything included

    NaviTruck

CarPlay, Android Auto, live traffic and offline maps in one subscription, with a free trial.

“Not stated” and “Not documented” mean we could not find it in the app’s listing or help pages, not that the app definitely lacks it.

Where bridge strikes really happen

Every truck and caravan app here will keep you clear of a low bridge once you have entered a destination. The close calls happen elsewhere: a detour around roadworks, pulling into a town for fuel, finding the caravan park entrance, the run back to the depot.

That is the gap NaviTruck's background protection was built for. You just drive. The app notices you are moving, even if you have not opened it, checks the road ahead against your rig and warns you on the lock screen before a bridge, weight limit or width restriction you do not fit. The other phone apps we checked document restriction checks only for a planned route. Queensland Rail recorded 369 rail bridge strikes in 2023/24 alone.

More on how it works: background restriction alerts.

Each app in more detail

NaviTruck GPS Truck & Caravan

Truck and caravan sat nav for iPhone and Android. Enter your rig once (height, width, length, weight, axles, hazmat class) and every route avoids the low bridges, weight limits and narrow roads it does not fit. Offline maps cover the whole of Australia, so it keeps working on long runs without signal. One subscription includes every feature, with a free trial.

Good: Background protection. NaviTruck notices when you start driving and warns you before a low bridge, weight limit or width restriction that applies to your vehicle, even with no destination set and the app closed, so a detour or a pull-in for fuel is covered too. It also runs on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, at no extra cost.

TomTom GO Expert: Truck GPS

TomTom's list of countries with truck restriction data does not include Australia, and no caravan profile is listed for the app.

Sygic GPS Truck & Caravan

Truck and caravan profiles, but CarPlay, Android Auto and live traffic are paid add-ons, and no restriction alerts without a route are documented.

CoPilot GPS Sat-Nav & Traffic

Its own listing says truck and caravan navigation are not available in all regions; Australian truck routing is not confirmed, and live traffic costs extra.

TruckWiz Australian Navigation

Trucks only, with no caravan profile, and CarPlay has been removed for now.

Hema 4WD Maps

An offline map viewer: no turn-by-turn and no routing for your caravan's size.

Garmin Drive and dēzl apps

Companion apps for Garmin devices: they do not navigate on the phone.

Google Maps and Waze

No vehicle profile at all, so they cannot avoid a low bridge or a weight limit.

Road trains, B-doubles and restricted access vehicles

Australia's restricted access vehicle networks are where the mainstream apps stop. None of them, NaviTruck included, publishes support for road train, B-double or PBS route networks. For any restricted access combination, your permits and the official network maps for each state you drive through remain the source of truth; a GPS app is a second pair of eyes for bridges and load limits, not a permit.

Campsite apps are not sat navs

WikiCamps, CAMPS Australia Wide and CamperMate are brilliant for finding somewhere to stop, and CAMPS can filter campsites by your vehicle's size. None of them gives caravan-aware turn-by-turn directions; CamperMate hands you over to your phone's maps app. Use one to choose the campsite and a caravan GPS to get there.

What about Trucker Path and Hammer?

They top most “best truck GPS” lists, but those lists are American. The official apps are not available in Australia, and look-alike apps with similar names in Australian search results come from unrelated developers.

What to check before you choose

  • A full vehicle profile: height, width, length, weight and axles for the whole rig, caravan or trailer included.
  • Offline maps: the whole of Australia downloaded before you leave signal behind.
  • Warnings off-route: whether you are protected when no destination is set.
  • Your dash screen: CarPlay or Android Auto, and whether it costs extra.
  • Restricted access vehicles: if you run road trains or B-doubles, how the app handles RAV routes, and your permits.

Common questions

What is the best truck GPS app in Australia?

NaviTruck is our pick. Like Sygic and TomTom it has a truck profile, offline maps, CarPlay and Android Auto, but it is the only app we found that warns before low bridges and weight limits with no route set, even with the app closed, and it covers caravans in the same subscription.

What is the best GPS app for towing a caravan in Australia?

Look for a caravan profile that takes the whole rig's height, length and weight. NaviTruck, Sygic Truck & Caravan and CoPilot have one. Hema 4WD Maps, WikiCamps and CamperMate are great companions, but they do not do caravan-aware turn-by-turn navigation.

Which GPS apps handle road trains and B-doubles?

None of the mainstream apps (NaviTruck, TomTom, Sygic, CoPilot) publishes support for Australia's restricted access vehicle networks. Always check your permits and the network maps for your state.

Do Trucker Path or Hammer work in Australia?

No. The official Trucker Path, Hammer and TruckMap apps are not on the Australian App Store. Apps with similar names that do show up in Australian searches come from unrelated developers.

Can I use Google Maps when towing a caravan?

For finding places, yes; for routing, not on its own. Google Maps and Waze cannot take your caravan's height, length or weight, so they cannot avoid a low bridge or a narrow road. Google's 2026 large-vehicle routing is a developer service in the US, not a Google Maps feature.

Which GPS warns about low bridges when I'm not navigating?

NaviTruck warns before low bridges, weight limits and width restrictions that apply to your vehicle without a route, in the background, and even after the app has been closed. We found no other phone app in Australia that documents this, as of October 2026.
