The best truck GPS and RV GPS apps in the US (2026)

By the NaviTruck team · Updated 15 October 2026

You know the moment: a detour sign, a street you have never driven, and an overpass ahead with a clearance you would rather not test. Your phone's maps app will not help. It has no idea your trailer is 13'6" or that your fifth wheel puts you at 45 feet. A truck or RV GPS does. Here is how the apps US drivers actually use stack up, and why we think NaviTruck belongs on your dash.

The short answer

    NaviTruck

CarPlay, Android Auto, live traffic and offline maps in one subscription, with a free trial.

Where low-clearance hits really happen

Every truck app on this list will route you around a low clearance once you have entered a destination. But the close calls happen elsewhere: the detour nobody planned, hunting for the right gate at a shipper, a quick fuel stop, the run back to the yard. Nobody sets a route for those.

That is the gap NaviTruck's background protection was built for. You just drive. The app notices you are moving, even if you have not opened it, checks the road ahead against your rig and warns you on the lock screen before a clearance, weight limit or width restriction you do not fit. The other phone apps we checked document restriction checks only for a planned route. New York State alone reported 310 bridge strikes in 2025.

More on how it works: background restriction alerts.

Each app in more detail

NaviTruck GPS Truck & Caravan

Truck and RV GPS for iPhone and Android. Enter your rig once (height, width, length, weight, axles, hazmat class) and every route avoids the low clearances, weight limits and tight streets it does not fit. Offline 3D maps, live traffic, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. One subscription includes every feature, with a free trial.

Good: Background protection. NaviTruck notices when you start driving and warns you before a low clearance, weight limit or width restriction that applies to your vehicle, even with no destination set and the app closed. The alert lands on your lock screen, so detours, the last mile to a dock or campground, and short runs you know by heart are covered too.

Trucker Path: Truck GPS & Fuel

Built around parking and fuel; truck routing and CarPlay need its top paid tier, Android Auto is not stated, and it covers North America only.

Hammer: Truck GPS & Maps

Routing and offline maps need a subscription; CarPlay and Android Auto are not documented, and it covers North America only.

TruckMap – Truck GPS Routes

Offline maps, CarPlay and Android Auto are not stated, and there is no RV profile.

Trucker Guide: Truck GPS Maps

Its profile fields, offline maps, CarPlay and Android Auto are not documented.

CoPilot GPS Navigation

Its RV profile stops at 14 ft and 26,000 lb, and live traffic costs extra.

Sygic Truck & RV Navigation

CarPlay, Android Auto and live traffic are paid add-ons, and no restriction alerts without a route are documented.

TomTom GO Expert: Truck GPS

Truck routing with offline maps and CarPlay, but no caravan profile is listed for the app and no restriction warnings without a route are documented for it.

RV LIFE – RV GPS & Campgrounds

RV only, with no truck profile; GPS, offline maps and car screens need Pro.

Google Maps and Waze

No vehicle profile at all, so they cannot avoid a low bridge or a weight limit.

Devices, not apps: Garmin and Rand McNally

Garmin's dēzl and Rand McNally's TND navigators are dedicated devices. Their phone apps pair with the device for traffic, weather and fuel prices; the truck routing itself runs on the device.

What to check before you choose

  • A full vehicle profile: height, width, length, weight and axles; hazmat class if you haul placarded loads.
  • Warnings off-route: whether you are protected when no destination is set.
  • Offline maps: for long stretches without signal.
  • Your dash screen: CarPlay or Android Auto, and whether it costs extra.

Common questions

What is the best truck GPS app in the US?

NaviTruck is our pick for navigation: it is the only app we found that documents warnings before low clearances and weight limits with no route set, even with the app closed, and it includes CarPlay, Android Auto and an RV profile in one subscription.

What is the best GPS app for an RV?

Look for a profile that takes your RV's height, length and weight. NaviTruck has one with no size cap, plus low-clearance alerts even when you are not navigating. CoPilot caps its RV profile at 14 ft and 26,000 lb.

Can I use Google Maps in a semi or an RV?

Not as your only GPS. The Google Maps and Waze apps cannot take your vehicle's height, width or weight, so they cannot avoid a low clearance or a no-truck route. Google's Large Vehicle Routing (August 2026) is a developer service for fleet apps, not a Google Maps setting.

Which truck GPS warns about low clearances when I'm not navigating?

NaviTruck warns before low clearances, weight limits and width restrictions that apply to your vehicle without a route, in the background, and even after the app has been closed. We found no other phone app that documents this, as of October 2026.

Which truck GPS apps work with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

NaviTruck, CoPilot and TomTom GO Expert support both. Sygic supports both as a paid add-on, Trucker Path offers CarPlay in its top tier, and RV LIFE in Pro. We could not confirm either for Hammer, TruckMap or Trucker Guide.

Are Garmin dēzl and Rand McNally apps?

Not for navigation. Garmin's dēzl and Drive apps pair with Garmin devices, and Rand McNally's truck navigation runs on its TND devices and tablet; the phone apps are companions or fleet tools.
