The best truck and caravan sat nav apps in the UK (2026)

By the NaviTruck team · Updated 15 October 2026

You know the moment: a diversion sign, a road you have never driven, and somewhere ahead a railway bridge with a number on it you would rather not test. A car sat nav will not help. It has no idea your lorry is 4.2 metres tall or that the caravan makes you 12 metres long. A truck sat nav does. Here is how the apps UK drivers actually use stack up, and why we think NaviTruck is the one to have in the cab.

The short answer

  • Alerts when you are not navigating

    NaviTruck

Warns before low bridges, weight and width limits on any road, with no route set, even with the app closed.

  • Trucks and caravans in one app

    NaviTruck

Profiles for lorries, vans, coaches, motorhomes and caravans; switch in one tap.

  • Everything included

    NaviTruck

CarPlay, Android Auto, live traffic and offline maps in one subscription, with a free trial.

“Not stated” and “Not documented” mean we could not find it in the app’s listing or help pages, not that the app definitely lacks it.

Where bridge strikes really happen

Every app on this list will steer you round a low bridge once you have typed in a destination. But think about where the near misses happen: the diversion nobody planned, the industrial estate where the gate is not where the map says, the five-minute run back to the yard you have done a hundred times. Nobody sets a route for those.

That is the gap NaviTruck's background protection was built for. You just drive. The app notices you are moving, even if you have not opened it, checks the road ahead against your vehicle and warns you on the lock screen before a bridge, weight limit or width restriction you do not fit. The other phone apps we checked document restriction checks only for a planned route. Network Rail counted 1,666 strikes on its bridges in 2024/25; we would like yours never to be one of them.

More on how it works: background restriction alerts.

Each app in more detail

NaviTruck GPS Truck & Caravan

Truck and caravan sat nav for iPhone and Android built around UK lorry restrictions: low bridges, 7.5t zones, the London lorry control scheme, LEZ and ULEZ, with heights in feet and inches and weights in tonnes. One subscription includes every feature, with a free trial.

Good: Background protection. NaviTruck notices when you start driving and warns you before a low bridge, weight limit or width restriction that applies to your vehicle, even with no destination set and the app closed. The warning arrives on the lock screen, so it covers the moments a planned route does not: detours, the last mile into an industrial estate, the short hop you know by heart. It also runs on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, works offline, and has profiles for lorries, vans, coaches, motorhomes and caravans.

TomTom GO Expert: Truck GPS

Truck routing with offline maps and CarPlay, but no caravan profile is listed for the app and no restriction warnings without a route are documented for it.

Sygic GPS Truck & Caravan

Truck and caravan profiles, but CarPlay, Android Auto and live traffic are paid add-ons, and no restriction alerts without a route are documented.

CoPilot GPS Sat-Nav & Traffic

Separate truck and caravan plans; the caravan profile stops at 3.80 m and 8 t, and live traffic costs extra.

Eurowag Navigation – Truck GPS

Trucks only, with no caravan profile; offline maps and truck warnings need Premium, and CarPlay and Android Auto are not stated.

Garmin dēzl and Garmin Drive apps

Companion apps for Garmin devices: they do not navigate on the phone.

Google Maps and Waze

No vehicle profile at all, so they cannot avoid a low bridge or a weight limit.

What about Hammer and Trucker Path?

They top many “best truck GPS” lists, but those lists are American. Neither app is on the UK App Store, and Hammer covers only the US, Canada and Mexico.

What to check before you choose

  • A full vehicle profile: height, width, length, weight and axles at minimum; hazmat class and tunnel category if you carry dangerous goods.
  • UK restrictions: low bridges, 7.5t limits, the London lorry control scheme, LEZ and ULEZ.
  • Warnings off-route: whether you are protected when no destination is set.
  • Offline maps: for rural roads and ports with poor signal.
  • Your cab screen: CarPlay or Android Auto, and whether it costs extra.
  • Caravans and motorhomes: a profile for the whole outfit, not just the car.

Common questions

What is the best sat nav app for HGV drivers in the UK?

NaviTruck is our pick. Like TomTom GO Expert, Sygic and CoPilot it has a truck profile, offline maps, CarPlay and Android Auto, but it is the only app we found that documents warnings before low bridges and weight limits when you have no route set and the app is closed. It also covers caravans and motorhomes in the same subscription.

Which truck sat nav warns about low bridges when I'm not navigating?

NaviTruck warns before low bridges, weight limits and width restrictions that apply to your vehicle without a route, in the background, and even after the app has been closed. We found no other phone app that documents this, as of October 2026.

Can I use Google Maps or Waze in a lorry?

Not safely as your only sat nav. Neither app lets you enter your vehicle's height, weight or width, so neither can avoid a low bridge or a weight-limited road. Google's large-vehicle routing announced in 2026 is a developer service in the US, not a feature of the Google Maps app.

Do Hammer or Trucker Path work in the UK?

No. Both are popular North American trucking apps, but neither is available on the UK App Store, and Hammer's listing gives its coverage as the US, Canada and Mexico only.

Is there a sat nav app for towing a caravan in the UK?

Yes. NaviTruck, Sygic Truck & Caravan and CoPilot all have caravan or motorhome profiles, so the route takes your outfit's height, width, length and weight into account. Eurowag Navigation does not.

Which truck sat nav apps work with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

NaviTruck, TomTom GO Expert and CoPilot list both. Sygic supports both as a paid add-on. We could not confirm either for Eurowag Navigation.
